How the challenge works

The classic 52-week challenge starts with $1 in the first week, $2 in the second, and so on, ending with $52 in the last week of the year. The total is the sum of 1 to 52, which is $1,378. The appeal is that it starts painlessly and builds a habit before the amounts get noticeable.

Total = weeks × (first amount + last amount) ÷ 2

The weak spot is December, when the weekly amount hits $50 just as holiday spending peaks. That is why many people do the reverse version, starting at $52 in January while New Year motivation is high and finishing with $1 a week in December. The total is identical.

Making it your own

Change the starting amount and step to fit your goal. Starting at $5 and rising $5 a week gives $6,890 over a year, which is enough for a solid emergency fund. Some people double the classic amounts, or pick the weekly amounts in random order from a printed chart, crossing off whichever number fits that week's budget.

Other versions to try

If weekly saving does not fit your pay schedule, a biweekly version saves $2, $4, $6 and so on up to $52 over 26 paydays, for a total of $702. A daily penny challenge saves one cent on day one, two cents on day two and so on to $3.65 on the last day, adding up to $667.95 over the year.

Whichever version you pick, moving the money into a separate savings account each time, rather than leaving it in checking, is what makes the habit stick.
