What $10,000 Gets You in 20 Countries

By the Money Years editors · October 28, 2026

Ten thousand dollars is a number that comes up a lot when people dream about taking a year off, travelling slowly or testing life abroad. In the United States it covers a little over three months of ordinary living for one person. In some countries it covers a year or more. The gap is mostly down to rent, and to how much everyday things like meals and transport cost.

Below are 20 popular destinations, ranked by how long $10,000 lasts for one person renting their own one-bedroom apartment in the main city.

What stands out

South and Southeast Asia dominate the top of the list. In Bangalore, $10,000 lasts more than a year even on a moderate budget, and Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Kuala Lumpur all stretch it to around eight months. These cities combine fairly low rents with very cheap food, transport and services.

Some results surprise people. Tokyo, often thought of as one of the world’s most expensive cities, now comes in well below Lisbon or Madrid for an ordinary monthly budget, helped by a weak yen and modest rents outside the very centre. Seoul is cheaper than Mexico City on our figures, mainly because a small officetel rents for less, although it usually needs a refundable deposit. Bali, meanwhile, is not as cheap as its reputation suggests if you want your own villa in a popular area like Canggu, where rents have climbed with demand from remote workers.

Southern Europe has become much more expensive for housing. Rents in Lisbon and Madrid now take more than half of a moderate monthly budget, which is why $10,000 lasts less than four months in either city.

What sharing does to the ranking

Because rent is the single biggest line almost everywhere, renting a room in a shared flat or splitting a one-bedroom with a partner changes the results more than any other choice. Here is the moderate budget for a selection of cities with rent cut in half:

City Months on $10,000, own place Months, shared rent Rent’s share of budget
Bangalore 13.2 16.0 35%
Bangkok 8.1 10.4 44%
Ho Chi Minh City 8.1 10.6 47%
Kuala Lumpur 7.9 10.4 48%
Seoul 5.3 6.2 28%
Mexico City 4.6 5.9 46%
Tokyo 4.1 5.0 34%
Lisbon 3.7 5.0 53%
US average 3.1 4.1 49%
London 2.4 3.4 58%

Cities where rent takes the largest share, such as London, Lisbon and Kuala Lumpur, gain the most from sharing. Seoul and Tokyo gain the least, because rents for small apartments there are modest compared with other costs. In Seoul, that low monthly rent usually comes with a sizable refundable deposit, which is worth planning for even though you get it back.

Adding health insurance

Long stays abroad need health cover, and it changes the picture most in the cheapest places, where it is a large share of the total. Adding $150 a month for an insurance policy, a common figure for a healthy adult under 50, cuts the Bangalore result from 13.2 to about 11 months and Bangkok from 8.1 to about 7.2. In London or Lisbon the same policy shortens the stay by only a week or two, because it is small next to rent.

Older travellers should expect higher premiums, and some countries require insurance as a condition of the visa. The digital nomad runway calculator and the retire abroad calculator both have a line for it.

Reading the list by region

Seen by region, the pattern is clear. South and Southeast Asia give the most time for the money, with every city in the top five there or nearby. The Caucasus, North Africa and Türkiye come next, offering six to seven months. Latin America and Central Europe sit in the middle at around five to six months, with Mexico City now one of the pricier choices in its region. East Asia is mixed, with Seoul and Tokyo cheaper than many expect. Western Europe and London are at the bottom, close to or below the US average.

That ranking is a good starting point for a sabbatical or a slow-travel year. A common plan is to spend the most expensive months, such as a stay in Europe, at the start or end of a trip, and the longer middle stretch somewhere further down the list.

How the numbers are built

Rent is a typical 2026 asking rent for a one-bedroom in each city, converted at October 2026 exchange rates. Other costs start from a US budget for one person and are scaled by the World Bank’s International Comparison Program price levels for each type of spending, so a country where restaurant meals cost a third of US prices gets a third of the eating-out budget. Lean means cooking more, using public transport and renting further out; moderate is an ordinary, comfortable single life.

The figures leave out flights, visas and health insurance, which can add several hundred dollars a month for a long stay. Treat them as a planning starting point rather than a quote.

Making $10,000 last longer

Sharing an apartment cuts rent roughly in half and can add months to every result above. Staying a month or more at a time, rather than booking nightly, brings accommodation close to local long-term prices. And choosing a second-tier city, such as Chiang Mai instead of Bangkok or Porto instead of Lisbon, often lowers rents a lot with little change in quality of life.
