Your pay, sliced thin
Seeing pay per minute or per second is a fun way to make an abstract salary concrete. A $75,000 salary works out to about $36 an hour, 60 cents a minute and one cent every second at work. Spread across every second of the year, including nights and weekends, it is about a quarter of a cent per second.
It also makes for a sharp spending check: a $6 coffee costs ten minutes at work, and a two-hour meeting with eight people on similar salaries costs the company over $575 in pay alone.
After tax, per second
The figures above are before tax. On a $75,000 salary, a single filer with no state income tax takes home about $61,590 a year after 2026 federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare. At 40 hours a week, that is about 0.82 cents for every second at work, compared with about 1 cent before tax.
For comparison, the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour works out to about 0.2 cents a second. The per-second view is mostly for fun, but it is a memorable way to think about meetings, commutes and time spent on low-value tasks.
